Why Payments Canada Accreditation
Guarantees Your Cheques Clear
Payments Canada — the federal body governing Canada's clearing and settlement system — operates the Cheque Printer Self Accreditation (CPSA) Program. Only certified printers earn a 4-digit Printer ID number, exempting their cheques from Standard 006 bank testing requirements. Print & Cheques Now holds Printer ID #1010 — printed on the back of every cheque we produce, so your bank accepts them without delay.
The Authority Behind Canadian Payments
What Is Payments Canada and Why Does It Matter?
Payments Canada is the federal organization responsible for Canada's payment clearing and settlement infrastructure — including the rules, standards, and systems that govern every cheque written in this country.
Established under the Canadian Payments Act, Payments Canada (formerly the Canadian Payments Association) sets the national rules for how financial transactions clear between banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions. Every business cheque drawn on a Canadian account must comply with Payments Canada standards before it can be processed in the national clearing system.
When a cheque fails to meet Payments Canada's Standard 006 requirements, it can be rejected at the clearing house — causing payment delays, return fees, and disruption to your cash flow. That's why choosing a printer with verified accreditation isn't just a convenience; it's a financial safeguard.

The Technical Standard
What Is Payments Canada Standard 006?
Standard 006 is Payments Canada's official specification for MICR-Encoded Payment Items — the national rulebook that every cheque in Canada must follow to clear successfully.
What Standard 006 Governs
- Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) encoding requirements for the E-13B font
- Precise MICR clear band: 1.59 cm (5/8") at the bottom of the cheque
- Numeric date field formats: YYYYMMDD, MMDDYYYY, or DDMMYYYY with bilingual indicators
- Print Contrast Signal (PCS) minimums for image capture and readability
- Security feature rules — void pantographs must not appear in captured images
- Mandatory serial number encoded in the MICR line
- Font and layout requirements for payee, amount, date, and signature fields
What Standard 006 Prohibits
- Inverse printing, italics, or slanted fonts anywhere on the front
- Bottom borders printed below the MICR line
- Black carbon on the reverse of cheques
- Complex or colourful backgrounds that interfere with image quality
- Any security feature that obscures key data areas (payee, amount, date, signature)
- Borders within the 1.59 cm MICR clear band
- Pantographs visible in captured cheque images
Payments Canada updated Standard 006 requirements to enable electronic imaging of cheques — allowing financial institutions to capture and exchange cheque images digitally while maintaining MICR processing. This dual-technology approach (MICR + image) is the current national standard for all Canadian cheque clearing.
Key Rule for Businesses: Payments Canada recommends that any organization printing its own cheques or ordering from a printing company submit pre-production samples to a financial institution for routine testing. Cheques printed by a self-accredited printer under the CPSA Program are not subject to these Standard 006 testing requirements — a major operational advantage.
The Accreditation Program
The Cheque Printer Self Accreditation (CPSA) Program — Explained
Payments Canada, its member financial institutions, and the Canadian Cheque Manufacturers Industry Group (CCMIG) jointly created the CPSA Program to streamline cheque testing and improve clearing efficiency across Canada.
The program was formally launched on June 1, 2010 and is administered by Payments Canada with support from the Cheque Printer Self Accreditation Group (CPSAG). Accreditation is not automatic — printers must apply, pay fees, attest to compliance, and maintain ongoing standards to retain their Printer ID number.
Governance: Who Administers the Program
The CPSAG board includes:
Financial Institution Representatives
Two direct or group clearers representing Canada's major banks, ensuring cheques produced by accredited printers integrate seamlessly with bank processing systems.
Canadian Cheque Manufacturers Industry Group (CCMIG)
Two representatives from the national cheque manufacturing industry group, bringing technical expertise on paper stock, security features, and MICR production standards.
Payments Canada Representative
One Payments Canada official who oversees program integrity, processes applications, and issues — or revokes — Printer ID numbers on behalf of the national payment system.

The program is a self-accreditation — printers attest to their compliance. The benefit is the testing exemption and the Printer ID number. Print & Cheques Now accurately identifies itself as a Payments Canada Self-Accredited Printer.

Common Questions
Payments Canada's Accredited Cheque Printing Standards
What is the Payments Canada Cheque Printer Self Accreditation Program?
Payments Canada, together with its member financial institutions and the Canadian Cheque Manufacturers Industry Group, created the Cheque Printer Self Accreditation (CPSA) Program to improve the efficiency of the cheque testing process in Canada. The program allows eligible cheque printers to formally attest to Payments Canada that they are capable of producing Standard 006-compliant documents. In exchange, cheques produced by an accredited printer are exempt from Standard 006 testing requirements at financial institutions — meaning your cheques do not need to be submitted to your bank for sample testing before use. The program has been active since June 1, 2010. You can read the full program details on the Payments Canada Cheque Printer Guide ↗.
Does Print & Cheques Now hold a valid Payments Canada Printer ID?
Yes. Print & Cheques Now Inc. holds Payments Canada Printer ID #1010 as an active member of the Cheque Printer Self Accreditation Program. This 4-digit ID is printed on the upper right corner of the back of every cheque we produce, in a minimum 10-point font with a print contrast signal of at least 0.60, prefaced with "Printer ID#" as required by Payments Canada. You can verify our status on the official Payments Canada directory ↗.
Will my bank accept cheques from Print & Cheques Now?

What is Payments Canada Standard 006 and why does it matter?
Payments Canada Standard 006 (officially "Specifications for Imageable MICR-Encoded Payment Items") is the national technical standard that every cheque drawn on a Canadian financial institution account must follow. It governs MICR encoding using E-13B font, the 1.59 cm clear band at the bottom of cheques, date field formats, security feature placement, and image capture requirements. Cheques that do not meet Standard 006 may be rejected during clearing, causing payment delays and return fees. All cheques produced by Print & Cheques Now are designed, tested, and printed to comply with Standard 006 within Payments Canada's accepted tolerances. We test every print run using industry-standard MICR verification equipment to confirm compliance before shipment.
Can I request proof that my cheques meet Standard 006?
Yes. Under the terms of the Payments Canada CPSA Program, an accredited printer must — on request — provide a compliance report confirming that cheques meet Standard 006 and that a sample was tested from each print run. Print & Cheques Now maintains this documentation for every order. To request a compliance report for your order, contact our team at 1-866-760-2661 or via our website. This is particularly useful for larger organizations, government agencies, or any business that requires documented proof of cheque compliance for audit purposes.
Does Payments Canada endorsement mean Payments Canada recommends Print & Cheques Now?
No — and it's important to be transparent about this. As noted in the official Payments Canada program documentation, self-accredited printers cannot claim that Payments Canada endorsed, certified, or accredited the printer or its products. The CPSA Program is a self-accreditation: Print & Cheques Now formally attests to Payments Canada that we comply with Standard 006. The benefit is our Printer ID #1010 and the exemption from pre-submission bank testing. Payments Canada does not endorse specific commercial printers — it sets and administers the standard. You can view our accreditation directly on the Payments Canada self-accredited printer directory ↗.
