How Canadian bank cheque ordering actually works

Every Canadian bank and credit union processes cheques the same way: through the Payments Canada clearing system, governed by CPA Standard 006. What clears a cheque isn’t your bank’s branding on the stock — it’s the MICR line at the bottom (the magnetic-ink account, transit, and institution numbers) being printed to CPA specification. That’s why you’re not required to order cheques through your bank, and why cheques ordered from a direct Canadian printer clear at RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, National Bank, ATB, every credit union, and every online bank without issue.

ChequesNow.ca is a CPA Self-Accredited printer (Payments Canada ID #1010) — the same accreditation the large bank-channel printers hold. We print to identical MICR spec, use the same security stock, and add two anti-fraud features most bank-channel cheques don’t include: hologram gold foil and heat-sensitive ink, both standard on our laser and manual business cheques. Every order goes through a proof-first review before printing so any error in your account number, transit, or legal name is caught before cheques ship — a step bank self-serve portals typically skip.

The hub below lists 89+ Canadian financial institutions we print for regularly. Each logo links to a bank-specific page with institution-number confirmation, turnaround windows, and compatibility notes. If your bank or credit union isn’t listed, we still print for it — start from the general Order Cheques flow and our team will confirm the MICR spec before production.

Bank & credit union cheque ordering FAQ

Will my bank accept cheques printed by ChequesNow.ca?

Yes. Our cheques are printed to Payments Canada Standard 006 (CPA #1010 self-accredited) — the same clearing specification every Canadian bank and credit union requires. When your banking details are correct, our cheques clear at RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, National Bank, ATB Financial, every credit union, and every online bank exactly like bank-channel cheques.

What information do I need to order cheques online?

The banking details from a void cheque or direct deposit form: your name and address as they appear on the account, transit number (5 digits), institution number (3 digits — identifies your bank, e.g. 003 for RBC, 004 for TD, 001 for BMO), and account number (7–12 digits depending on the institution). For business orders, your registered business name and optional logo.

What’s the difference between a transit number and an institution number?

Your institution number (also called bank number) is a 3-digit code that identifies your financial institution nationally — every RBC account has institution 003, every TD account has 004, every BMO has 001, and so on. Your transit number is a 5-digit code identifying your specific branch. Both are printed on the MICR line of every cheque you’ve ever received from your bank, and both are needed for Canadian clearing.

How do I read the MICR line at the bottom of a cheque?

The MICR line (the magnetic-ink line printed in E-13B font) reads left to right: cheque number first, then transit number (5 digits), then institution number (3 digits), then account number (7–12 digits). It’s printed in Payments Canada-approved MICR toner so every Canadian bank’s cheque sorter can read it automatically. If any of those numbers is wrong, the cheque won’t clear — which is why our proof step exists.

Which cheque type should I order?

Laser cheques are for printing from accounting or payroll software (QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, NetSuite, Wave, etc.) and are best for high-volume cheque runs. Manual cheques are handwritten with voucher stubs, ideal for field work, low volume, or businesses that still write cheques by hand. Personal cheques are for individual accounts, often ordered with duplicates for cleaner record keeping.

What security features come standard on ChequesNow.ca business cheques?

Every laser and manual business cheque includes hologram gold foil, heat-sensitive ink, micro-printing, chemical-reactive paper, and a void pantograph — standard, at no upcharge. The first two (hologram foil and heat-sensitive ink) are the most effective against photocopy and scan-based fraud, and they’re not included on most bank-channel business cheques.

How fast can I get my cheques delivered across Canada?

Same-day printing is available on orders placed by 2 PM EST, Monday through Friday. Standard production is one business day. Tracked shipping is typically 1–3 business days Canada-wide. Compare that to bank-channel ordering, which typically takes 5–10 business days before the cheques ever arrive.

Can I order cheques for business and personal accounts on the same order?

Yes. Many customers order laser cheques for their business, manual cheques for one-off payments, and personal cheques for their personal account on a single order. Each bank account gets its own proof before printing. For complex multi-account orders, call 1-866-760-2661 and we’ll walk you through it.

Are you affiliated with my bank or credit union?

No. ChequesNow.ca (Print & Cheques Now Inc.) is an independent, Canadian family-owned cheque printer — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of the institutions listed on this page. We are a CPA Self-Accredited Canadian printer that happens to print compatible cheques for every Canadian bank and credit union.

How do I reorder faster next time?

After your first order, use Express Reorder. It recalls your previous banking details, layout, cheque numbering sequence, and logo — so you can repeat a full reorder in under a minute.

What if my bank or credit union isn’t listed on this page?

We still print for it. Start from Order Cheques and our team will confirm your institution’s MICR specification before production. If you have a void cheque or direct deposit form, the transit, institution, and account numbers are all we need — any Canadian bank, credit union, online bank, or caisse populaire works.
